The Eagles, looking to add some much-needed wide receiver depth to their team, have just made an addition to their practice squad.

With the passing game significantly being affected on Thursday night without star wideout Alshon Jeffery, Philly knew they had to prepare for the worst. They’ve signed former Texans and Ohio State star Braxton Miller.

Philadelphia is currently thin at the receiver position after releasing Greg Ward and Rashard Davis from the practice squad on Friday. Jeffery is still recovering from rotator cuff surgery, while Mack Collins has been placed on injured reserve after suffering a groin injury.

Miller will most likely remain on the practice squad until he learns the new system. The signing is a chance for the former Buckeye to revamp his underwhelming NFL career. A third-round pick by the Texans in the NFL Draft, Miller caught 15 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown his rookie year before an injury in Week 13 ended his season prematurely. The next year he played in 11 games, but only started three. He managed to haul in 19 catches for 162 yards and a touchdown.

Going into his third year, there were questions as to whether Miller would even make the roster. After an unexciting preseason, Houston let him go.

Miller spent much of his Ohio State career as a quarterback before evolving into a receiver his final year. This has become a trend for athletic Ohio State quarterbacks under Urban Meyer, as Terrelle Pryor has undergone a similar route.

While the addition of the receiver is certainly to shore up depth at the position, the move is also interesting considering Miller’s history as a quarterback. If he does make it to the NFL, it seems inevitable that Doug Pederson would use the multitalented athlete to try the Philly Special yet again.
